Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) are organic substances (natural or synthetic) that control and influence the growth and development of plants. Unlike fertilizers, they don’t provide nutrients—rather, they regulate plant processes like height, flowering, fruiting, and ripening.

?? How do PGRs work?

PGRs affect plant hormones and help manage different stages of growth:

  • Stimulate or slow down plant growth
  • Control flowering and fruit formation
  • Improve root development
  • Enhance crop quality and yield

?? Main Types of PGRs

1. Auxins
→ Promote root development and cell elongation
→ Used in plant propagation

2. Gibberellins
→ Increase stem growth and seed germination
→ Help in bigger fruits

3. Cytokinins
→ Promote cell division
→ Delay aging (senescence) of leaves

4. Ethylene
→ Helps in fruit ripening
→ Used for uniform ripening

5. Abscisic Acid (ABA)
→ Slows down growth
→ Helps plants survive stress conditions

?? Why are PGRs important?

  • Control plant size and shape
  • Increase crop yield and uniformity
  • Improve fruit size and quality
  • Manage crop timing (early or delayed harvest)
